DC versus AC Chargers (slow versus fast)

In today’s fast-changing business world, where being efficient and innovative is crucial, the distinction between AC and DC chargers has become significant. As businesses aim to be more environmentally friendly and meet the growing demand for electric vehicles, knowing about these charging methods is a must.

Deciding between AC chargers and DC chargers isn’t just about convenience. It affects how smoothly a business runs, how happy its customers are, and how well it keeps up with the move to Electric Vehicles (EV). As businesses adapt to this big change, it’s smart to look closely at the benefits of each charging system. This isn’t just about technology – it’s about making smart business choices that save resources, help the environment, and keep customers satisfied.

Let’s dive into the specifics and explore the differences between AC and DC chargers, shedding light on how these charging technologies impact operational efficiency.

DC (Direct Current) Charger

A DC (Direct Current) charger is a device used to supply electric current to recharge batteries or devices that operate on direct current. Direct current flows in one direction with a constant voltage level. DC chargers are commonly used for rapidly recharging Electric Vehicle (EV) batteries.

DC chargers find dynamic application across a spectrum of settings, delivering rapid and high-power charging solutions to address the needs of various sectors including parking garages, commercial fleet operators, EV infrastructure providers, service operators, EV dealer workshops, and even traditional gas/service stations.

DC chargers play a pivotal role in maintaining operational efficiency. In addition to their widespread usage, DC chargers offer notable advantages in terms of energy transfer efficiency and reduced charging times, aligning perfectly with the growing demand for sustainable and high-performance charging solutions across industries.

National EV’s Level 3 DC Fast Chargers, also known as  Direct Current Fast Chargers (DCFCs), are the quickest chargers you can find, capable of providing up to 350 kW of power. Their main purpose is to charge an electric vehicle’s battery to about 80% in around 20-40 minutes, and to fully charge it in about 60-90 minutes. However, how fast these chargers can charge a vehicle depends on how quickly the vehicle can accept the charge. Right now, only a number of public charging stations possess the capability to deliver the utmost power level endorsed by premier EVs, such as certain models offered by Tesla.

AC (Alternating Current) Charger

An AC (Alternating Current) charger, on the other hand, operates differently from its DC counterpart. It delivers electricity in a back-and-forth flow, constantly changing direction. AC chargers are generally slower than DC chargers, with power outputs usually ranging from 3.7 kW to 22 kW for residential and commercial charging scenarios.

These chargers are commonly found in homes, commercial businesses, and public parking areas. AC chargers are beneficial for overnight charging and extended stays, as they provide a slower yet steady charging process that is well-suited for situations where there is ample time available. The compatibility of AC chargers with standard power outlets makes them versatile and convenient for a wide range of settings, ensuring that electric vehicle owners can easily access charging options in their day-to-day routines.

However, it’s worth noting that AC chargers typically require a vehicle to have an onboard converter to transform the AC power into the DC power needed for battery charging.

National EV’s Level 2 chargers offer a comprehensive selection of AC charging solutions, catering to the diverse needs of EV owners and businesses alike. With various power outputs and configurations, our Level 2 chargers provide efficient and reliable charging options, enhancing the convenience and accessibility of electric vehicle charging in both residential and commercial environments.
